Illegal trafficking of ivory in Africa is an illegal, but common practice. 70 year old Yang Feng Glan (A.K.A "Queen of Ivory"), and two other accomplices were sentenced to 15 years in prison in a Tanzanian court on Tuesday 2/19. The trio were found guilty of smuggling 860 elephant tusks from East Africa to China. The smuggled goods are valued at $6.45 million.Yang was actually arrested about three years earlier in September 2015 in the city of Dar es Salaam, however the trial was delayed. Yang had a restaurant in Dar es Salaam, and that store-front helped her to not raise suspicions.
Under Tanzania's Wildlife Protection Act, the trio's additional two sentence can actually be converted to a fine, which equates to twice the value of the smuggled ivory. In this case, the fine would be $12.9 million.
